As consumer brainwave-reading devices such as smart headbands and headphones grow in popularity, concerns about safety, privacy, and long-term neurological effects are increasing. Because these products are not regulated as medical devices, oversight gaps may exist.

To address these challenges, the IEEE Brain technical community—sponsored by the IEEE Society on Social Implications of Technology (SSIT)—is developing IEEE P7700: Recommended Practice for the Responsible Design and Development of Neurotechnologies. The standard will provide guidance for evaluating ethical, legal, social, and cultural considerations in neurotechnology design and use.

Chaired by IEEE Senior Member Laura Y. Cabrera, the international working group aims to establish practical guardrails as neurotechnology expands into consumer markets. The standard is anticipated to be published early next year.

Experts interested in contributing can register to participate in the standard’s development.
